HAPPY HOLIDAYS!
The end of the
year seems to get here faster and faster.
2009 has been a trying year for many of us, but we
are beginning to see light at the end of a very
long tunnel. In discussions
with my recruiting partners and other
business leaders, we are seeing a small upswing in
the employment market. I know that the media
is reporting higher employment figures coming out
of Washington. But we need to remember that
those figures are based on stale statistics.
It takes a number of weeks between the actual
calculation and the report. Those of us on
the front lines have more immediate feedback just
from our day to day involvement in the employment
industry. We are hoping that this beginning
will continue to grow throughout 2010.
We wish each and everyone of you a Happy
and Safe Holiday Season and a Positive New
Year!

UNEMPLOYMENT
BENEFITS EXTENDED
As unemployment benefits
continue to be extended, it is sometimes very easy
to lull ourselves into a mind set of "I will
look for a job when my benefits run out or are
close to running out". This is a very
dangerous position to take. 1) the
longer you are unemployed the rustier your skills
become 2) if you are not actively looking for
employment, you could miss your ideal
position 3) the longer you are unemployed, the
perception by a potential employer is that you are
not aggressive enough, or don't care about your
career enough, or are lazy, or a myriad of other
perceptions.
What to do if you are
unemployed or under
employed 1)
approach looking for a job as a job - get up EVERY morning, spend time
researching job opportunities, make personal phone
calls to potential employers, to recruiters, to
your networking groups, etc. Follow up with
e-mails. 2)
explore alternate job opportunities - take a
contract job, take a part-time job, take
classes. Companies realize it is tough out
there, but they also know that if you are working
at something (part-time, contract, school) you are
serious about being
employed. 3) be
flexible on salary, position and location.
Prepare yourself and your family for the
possibility of relocation.
4) stay positive
-no one wants to hire or be around a sad sack,
including
you.
