WOW - 2010!
It seems as if we were celebrating the turn
of the
century only a few months ago
and we are now at the end of the decade or
beginning of the new decade, however, you count
it.
As the beginning of the year is always a
time for new ideas, new plans, new thoughts. JR Walters
Resources has new plans too.
1) We are actively seeking clients with
opportunities off shore and applicants with
experience working and living off shore. Most
recently we have been working on an opportunity in
Libya.
2) For many years JR Walters
Resources has offered Alternative Staffing
Services for our design clients. We now have the
ability to offer these services for construction
management professionals.
Of course we are continuing our
direct placement services for professionals in all
fields.

WHAT IS IN A
NAME?
Daily we
hear new job titles. Is this a
different job? Is
this the same job with some
tweaks? Is
this just a new name for an old mouse
trap?
Maybe it is all of the
above.
A good example is the Human Resources and
Recruiting professions. Titles like
Personnel or Personnel Counselors or
Personnel
Consultants;
became Human Resources Specialists
or HR and Recruiters or Executive Recruiters or
Headhunters or Flesh Peddlers.
Then the title of People Person,
or Manager of People became common Now
titles such as Human Capital Managers, Talent
Acquisition Specialists are popping up. And I am
sure there are many others. Does the
title mean anything? I have
done some research on this and the answer is yes,
no, maybe.
There are new responsibilities, new tools
and new skills that seem to be tied to
each new title. Were these
responsibilities part of the old titles, but just
not defined?
Maybe. At the end of the
day, no matter what the new words, new
skills, new tools, new
titles are, the end goal
is selecting, hiring, developing, promoting
and retiring the successful employee.

As a seasoned
recruiter (that is a recruiter that has been in
the business over 20 years), I see
technologically challenged individuals daily. Some are
candidates, some are clients, some are recruiting
partners and yes some days it is me. For those
of us that grew up in the pre home computer age,
technology can be scary. It has
taken me two years to start using the calendar in
my phone.
The good old "day planner" book was my
friend.
However, today if you are on the job market
there are some things you need to be comfortable
with:
E-mail
Leaving telephone
messages
Having an
answering system for others to leave voice
messages
Texting
Electronic
resumes
Electronic
project lists
Electronic portfolio
(if you are in a design
profession)
Web cams - many
clients are now interviewing over web cams and
some applicants are adding video resumes together
with written
resumes
Updated software
for your profession - ie AEC industry - Revit,
BIM, etc.
When applicants
tell me that they don't need to know the
latest technology because the support people
do it or they are too high up the ladder, my
immediate thought is. "My client
will not
have an interest
in the applicant that isn't interested
enough in their profession to remain
up to date on the
technology. "
Whether we like it or not, we live in a
culture that requires Continuing Education
Credits.
Your career growth requires it. Your
personal life requires it. Embrace
technology and share in the excitement of learning
new things.
Good bye bulky old day
planner!
